BSA l29 sv 350 valve guides and spring seats.
« on: April 29, 2012, 05:32:22 PM »
Hi,

Sorry another one for you all.....

I think i need new valve guides made, one of the original ones that i have removed looks like its suffered from uneven wear. I see a lot of similar bronze guides on the internet, but do any of the manufacturers make ones to suit the l29? When i come to reset the valve guides, what is the best way to get accurate placement?

The spring seats are also too corroded to re - use, anyone know of a supplier  (being lazy here as I should probably make some).

Rob

Only use cast iron on sidevalves. They won't seize on you and have self lubricating qualities.

If you need new valve guides made I'd be surprised if you didn't need new valves. RogerWilko is right, use only cast iron as it has self lubricating qualities that bronze lacks. Remember the lubrication for your valve guides is pretty slap dash.
New valves are no drama as any competent head reconditioning shop will have facilities to cut valve blanks and make valve guides to  suit.
I'm sure if you enquire around your area there will be some engine reconditioning firm that deals with all the local vintage vehicles, stationary engines boat engines, lawnmowers, and other off beat stuff. Doing a single cylinder sidevalve will be a snack to them.
Cheers,

Dilema -

Just been in contact with a company and they suggested that a price per valve (alone, without guide) to be manufactured would be around about £120 per . The valves are slotted to locate the spring key, and therefore would need spark eroding to fit. This is my first quote back, so might be way off, but anyone got any bright ideas to save a bit (hopefully a lot) of cash?

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,
A decent engine reconditioners shop will have books containing hundreds of valve sizes
There will be some in there that will be a good basis for modification
I have modified Perkins diesel valves to fit several BSA and AJS models, 3/8 stem and 45mm dia head
Also ""Bantam John"" has blank valves in various sizes, around £20 a pop, these have long stems which are handy for SV engines
I have just had a pair of these slotted (spark eroded for £20) These are going into a side valve Blackburne!!
An alternative is to turn collet grooves and fit caps and collets from a more modern BSA/Triumph etc.

I picked up a couple of "gold star " valves at Stafford at the weekend, these are going to be modified to fit the BSA L25 ohv engine, these engines have really big valves for a 350  :o
I will be using BSA A65 caps and collets
My 350ohv  Blackburne engine has BSA A65 valves fitted 8) I made new guides to suit the smaller stems

HTH
John

Thanks John, great advice. I thought that this might be possible, it looked like a high precision race engineering company that does vintage bikes on the side. i'll get some proper dimensions flying around some contacts and see what i come up with.
