BSA 500 sidevalve

I Recently acquired this motorcycle to be restored - Can anyone assist with correct yearmodel please . Frame number -U 2447 , Engine number - M 17891 . It came with a extra frame and front forks - frame number U 9655 . It came to me disassembled thus I am not sure which frame is correct for my engine - all info appreciated please . wjtheron@hotmail.com

Hi Help please - the bike is pre -sloper , is there an email adress for any knowledgeble person to enable me to forward pictures of my bike ? I want to put the correct engine per frame . It also came with a acetylene headlamp , furthermore I have 3 sets of front forks thus I am really in the dark .Regards Willem

Just post the pics here - we will soon sort them out. !
We have quite a good record for even oddball bikes, although sometimes it takes a little while.
BSA were one of the biggest manufacturers back then, so they are VERY well documented.

They also had quite a range of models then, so you sometimes need a little inside knowledge to read the brochure fine print - to distinguish some seemingly very similar models.
If the frames are visually identical (?) it might be quite difficult to sort which one the engines belongs to, in the absence of factory records or a previous rego document for that particular bike.
Is there something broken or damaged on one frame, thats often the reason for another one being involved. (?).

Forums are to share information. Frame U2447 is from a 1926 4.98 HP DeLuxe. Are you sure the engine number is M17891? This dates to late 1928, but M7891 would be a 1926 number.

Hi,
To the best of my knowledge the easy way to separate 26 from 28 engines will be the
later engine will have the oil sight feed and regulator mounted on the timing case
