Excelsior paint spec

Hi all, I'm restoring a 1949 excelsior roadmaster but can't find the paint spec anywhere, all I know is that it's maroon! Any ideas?

Your best bet is to take an original piece of maroon excelsior in to the painter/ suppler to have it matched.  They often have books of colour chips, which you can choose from.

Unless someone here can supply a code - which often don't translate well across different paint manufacturers. 

I'd suspect this would be a fairly good match - but is for another make.

Unfortunately I can't take s piece of the bike in to a paint supplier as it has been hand painted.

Look inside the toolbox or underneath the tank or some other place. If it was hand painted you can guarantee the painter will have missed somewhere.
Nor would I obsess too much about getting it exactly right. As a long standing two-stroke rider (mainly Excelsior) I can tell you no one will ever comment about how accurate your paint job is. We don’t seem to attract the obsessives.

Yes, and I was going to suggest have you tried stripping off the handpainted efforts, to see if there is any surviving maroon underneath.

This bike's pics appear in a number of places, with varying shades of red/maroon.
This pic seems rather bright, it would generally be a shade or 2 darker.
(Reds are notoriously difficult to photograph)


The RAL paint numbers in the low 3000's cover dark reds, see if any match anything you can find. ?
