T100 conversion to TR5C barrels and Head????
« on: September 11, 2008, 01:07:54 AM »
Hi All
Today, I bought a TR5C  H18788 With Frame H18788,  I understand from your past post that this bike is a 1961 Triumph 500 cc High Compression model and maybe called Trophy 500.  I can not find a manual on this model.
We have been racing a 1949 T100 twin 500cc Triumph at Bonneville Salt Flats in the vintage class.  Vintage must be older than 1956.  See www.scta-bni.org  for 2008 records for bikes.  Our bike entry is
GoldWingLyon______   and the lady riders name.
I used three rookie lady riders to set Four records this year.  The ladies would like to enter the vintage 350 cc class.

Would it be possible to Sleeve the bore down to 52 mm on the TR5C cylinder and install it and the TR5C head on the T100 engine cases?  Will the TR5C cylinder bolt to the T100 engine cases? Will the valves clear the edge of the smaller bore?  Will the camshaft tappets line up with the T100 cam?

The rules state the head and cylinder must be OEM.

To go another route, Which would run faster?   A Factory 3T 350 twin or a T100 de-bored to become 350 cc's ?  The T100 has a longer stroke.

Thanks
Kenny Lyon

That's a TR5A/C you've got there. Triumph's first unit competition bike, one year only and VERY rare. Do not mess it up, it's valuable!
Is it complete and original? One went for big bucks at a US auction house a while back (something like $18,000 from memory).
Anyway, unit barrels aren't interchangeable with pre-unit cases....

Thank you for your response.  The engine is complete, with carb and dist. The frame has not be chopped. Missing front end and many parts. Bike appears to have been raced.  Stored indoors for over 25 years.

I got a great deal on this incomplete bike, from one of my sponsors.  They expect me to use the parts to build a bike my lady riders can race.  It would be very bad form on my part to just sell it for a profit.  The ladies want to race in the Vintage 350 cc class (pre 1956) with a twin Triumph.  My sponsors may be ok with some kind of a trade.   The engine case is stamped TR5C --- there is no "A".
Send me a e-mail address at my hotmail below and I will send you photos of the TR5C.

Our plans right now, are to do some major mods. You are right the barrels are not interchangeable.  The barrels sleeves are too large to fit into the T100 cases and too short for the t100 stroke, but we plan cut the cylinder base off and to sleeve it for a 52 mm piston, add a !/2 stroker plate and the barrels will fit, using the stock TR5C head.  May still have a problem with cam/tappet/pushrods/ ect.
Have not started the work yet.

Thanks
Kenny

Kevin Sandford sent me an e-mail, requesting photo.  Only the e-mail address is bad.  Please e-mail me again.  I will send photos.
