Norton Identification

I have just purchased a Norton ES2 with Engine No F4 34410. According to records this is a 1951 ES2 however 34410 puts it at 1950.  Nevertheless I cannot determine the year model of the frame which appears more recent than 1950/51.  Can someone help me as I cannot locate a frame number which I understand should be the same as the engine.

Hello Steven, the Laydown gearbox and composite front hub suggest 1956 to me and the rolling chassis all looks correct for that year.

I think that the frame number was stamped on the fuel tank support lug on the left hand side. Have you looked there ? I assume that you'll find an 'L' prefix.

Nortons commenced production of the following model year after the annual holidays so the first 1951 models were indeed made in 1950.

The cycle certainly looks like an early '56 model. The frame number should be on the headstock I think? If not, check on the engine mounting lugs?

The engine does appear to be from  a 1951 model (F = 1951, 4 = ES2) and 1951 production started from 33943, although some sources may give it as starting at 35560.

Thanks RichP and L.A.B. for the response.  I found the Frame No on the fuel tank support lug as suggested. It has 4 then below it 67486 which would make it a 1956 frame as you pointed out.  I suppose I therefore have a 1951 motor in a 1956 frame.  Now down to the project.  Cheers
