Special tool for primary chain adj? T120R
« on: August 16, 2006, 02:42:42 AM »
Hi

I'm trying to adjust my primary chain for the first time.

First of all, my manual says that freeplay should be 3/8" or 9.5mm, and mine is about 12mm.  So, I will adjust it but is that a significant amount and enough to cause a rattle?

Secondly, it says I need a hexagen headed screw driver D2108 as supplied in tool kit.  I don't have one, but would a normal stubby phillips do?

Thirdly, if there's anyone in the North Yorkshire area who wouldn't mind teaching a novice a thing or two about Bonneville maintenance, can you let me know. I'd be very grateful for some help.

thanks

The 'tool' is really not much more than a threadless bolt with a flat blade screwdriver end that can be turned with a spanner in the space available.

So provided you have a screwdriver that fits (and that you are able to turn it) then it should do the job.

Hi again

I managed to get a screw driver into the slot and did turn it, but it does not seem to to affect the adjustment of the primary chain.

If I remove the primary chain case, will all be revealed and can I adjust it more easily?

thanks

It would probably be a good idea to remove the cover and have a look as it isn't a very difficult job, and you can at least inspect the tensioner mechanism, (and give the clutch a look over at the same time too!).
