norton domi help please (newbie)
« on: October 19, 2010, 06:55:22 PM »
hi all.

i have just got myself on the site and thought i would say hi....aaand also i need some help with a couple of bits pleeease.
my dad gave me his old norton dominator 99 cafe racer this summer and i have since started to restore it to the way he had it when he was running it all those years ago.it had been in a garage under some plastic so was in pretty good order to be fair!! i have taken the bike to bits and have started to clean it up and put it back together.i have a couple of othe bikes but they arent classics so this is something new to me.

i am having a couple of probs at the moment though so if some of you kind folk have any help for me i would be very happy!!!!  on the piston, there are the two combustion rings at the top and then another ring at the bottom...this ring is a little thinker than the others and im told it is an "oil ring" ???  i need one of those for the l.h. side piston.the bike is standerd,650 and the motor hasnt been changed in any way.i have looked all over for the rings and i have hit a mine field with sizes.........+ .020..........and oversized....im confused, can anybody help??

also...i have taken the clutch appart now and the clutch plates have a little rust and some pitting around the edges.....should i change the clutch plates or can i clean them up and re-use the ones that are in there?? they have small black bits on the clutch plate too...like a plastic or carbon composit....would i have to change those on the clutch basket or not.

o know this is a lot to ask folks and that i may not have explaind it very well...but if there is anyone who can help me i would be very greatfull as i am trying to get the bike done for next year.i could put pics up here if that is pos to do

thank you all again!!!

Welcome Glenn,

Getting piston rings shouldn't be too much of a problem, but first, can you give us your approximate location on the planet, as then we won't end up recommending parts suppliers who may be on the opposite side of the globe to you?

Piston rings normally come in sets of three = Two upper "compression" rings (which may or may not be exactly identical) and a third "oil scraper" (or "oil control") ring.

You will need to order either standard or whatever oversize rings are required to match the piston size, so look for any markings on the tops of the pistons to see if they are marked "STD" (standard), or if the cylinders have already been re bored and oversize pistons fitted they should be marked either +.020, +.030, +.040, etc.. The standard Domi 99 (600cc) bore size was 68mm, and +.020 will be twenty thousandths of an inch larger, and +.030 is thirty thousandths larger, etc.

If you cannot find any markings on the pistons, then you will need to accurately measure the cylinder bores to determine if they are still standard 68mm size or not?
If the bores are worn, then they may need re-boring anyway, so then you'd need new oversize pistons and rings to match the over size.

You could try cleaning up the clutch plates, but again there shouldn't be any problem getting new ones if necessary.

In that case, why mess around with ebay, your best bet would be Norvil Motorcycles-as they will probably have everything you need (and a whole lot more besides).
