Oil Leak
« on: April 10, 2011, 08:46:05 AM »
 :-\ G,day again folks,,,,
I have an oil leak problem and its driving me mad trying to get any information on the subject.
My problem is on the early triumphs ( meaning the Val Page models)1934 - 1936 there is a little button that pops up out of the petrol tank when the motor has oil pressure to the big ends, a tell tale button, early kind of oil pressure gauge.
Here lies my oil leak, after striping down the little plunger assembly and theres no saying it is assembled correctly anyway, I cant see any seal to stop the oil leaking out of the little button that pops up.
Would anyone no if spares are available or if any NOS  replacements might be around the place and most of all does anyone no where I could get any info on how it is supposed to work or repair procedure,,,, this forum seems to be a really good source for my wierd prodlems so heres hoping ,, Cheers  ???

Hi Sludgetrap
I have a couple of bikes with similar indicator buttons
on the Rudge the button is screwed on then the end rivited   theres a disc inside the button , cant remember if this is screwed  or pressed in?? inside the disc theres a rubber seal, I made one from a neoprene rocker cover gasket
I heated a metal wire and then burned a hole in the centre of the rubber,
Its been like that for 30 odd years and hasnt leaked yet
The Best and Lloyd indicator is the same except that the seal cover is screwed on
Inside the indicator body theres just a little piston with the rod and a spring
SRM are making Triumph pressure relief valves with indicating button, I wonder if they have spare seals or are the using O rings??
HTH

Thanks Chaterlea25,,,,
Best and LIoyd indicator,,,ok gives me something to work on,,the one thats on my bike only has a patent number and from searching the net I found it was patented in 1923, not much help there, I dont no that I could use an o ring to stop the leak as it might create to much drag on the side of the button to alow it to popup, this one has a really weak hair spring that actually holds the button down and as the oil pressure comes up so does the button,, whoever thought this thing up went to a lot of trouble, theres plungers and spacers and lever action arms and some other kind of primary plunger, but like I said in the original post I dont even no if this thing has the original parts, cant find any info anywhere except the 1934 parts book,,,,but of course I cant find a new old stock or even a second hand one to see whats supposed to be inside and how it works ,, looks like I keep searching , any info welcomed ,,,cheers
