ceefer driving me nuts

can anyone help please? i am working on my first renovation product a 1965 c15 and am nearly ready to give up. i have fitted new valve guides and have good compression ,i have changed the dizzy & coil and have a good spark at the plug . i believe the timing is correct as i have done it that many times but it still won.t start. all it does is backfire into the air filter. any ideas would  help my other problem is actually kicking it over.  with the plug out it is easy but with the plug in the kickstart seems to just slip without the engine turning. any help will be really appreciated,i thought this was going to be a nice retirement project but it has become a real windup.

Hi there
It sounds to me that you have 2 different problems here. I have never owned a C15 but backfiring through the carb is usually a timing problem you say the ignition timing is correct but is the valve timing correct it could be that your inlet valve is not fully closed when it fires this would cause a backfire. The other problem I would say is a clutch problem the clutch is slipping under compression it may need adjusting either spring tension or at the cable.

As bikerbob says you have two different problems. With the ignition timining make sure that it,s not 180 degrees out and that you have timed it on the compression stroke ( just after the inlet valve has closed) .
