Triumph 5ta distributor
« on: April 16, 2012, 11:54:06 AM »
Hi guys, I need to remove the distributor from my 1962 5ta in order to replace the cylinder barrel which has cracked. What is the procedure for this job and are there any points to watch out for? My Haines manual for 57- 65 models mysteriously mentions nothing about distributor models. If I mark the dis. and the case will the timing automatically be right? I do not have a timing device.

Cheers guys, Tony

Safest to set the engine (by turning forwards) to TDC on the right hand cylinder first. That is number one and on the right hand sitting on the bike.
Mark the distributor body and engine caseing exactly in line. Then remove the distributor cap and note or mark the position of the rotor arm.
As you remove the distributor you will see the rotor arm rotate as it disengages from the skew drive gear. You will need to allow for that as you replace the unit.
It is an absolute MUST to return the engine to TDC on number one cylinder (turning the engine forwards not backwards) before replaceing the unit or all else will be in vain.
