Reclaiming Registrations (SH - Berwickshire)
« on: July 21, 2007, 09:24:32 PM »
The Bike: BSA W6 500cc sidevalve single Reg: SH4040
The Year: 1932
Paperwork: Vanished

The Story:

BSA Owners club website say registration records are presumed missing or destroyed for Berwickshire.

However I started digging, and the Kithead Trust have the card indexes for SH1 - SH 7041. But the entry for SH4040 doesnt contain a frame number (aaargh)

I kept digging. Berwickshire has gone through a number of border changes. The Northumberland Museum at Woodhorn claims to have the register of indexes for Berwickshire. However I then got a phone call saying there was no entry present for SH4040. I dont really understand how this could be, and will phone again next week.  Attending in person is not easy (Im near Bristol).

Ive emailed the library section of the VMCC, but in the meantime, does anyone know anything that I could try, particularly if there may be any other sources of local records that I could research?

The bike is virtually complete in unrestored condition. It has both front and rear numbers, and I suppose I could get the damn thing carbon dated but we are dealing with DVLA here arent we?

Im not getting an age related plate without a fight first.

Many Thanks

Hi, you really need to have a look for yourself in the Northumberland Musem archives. I've had written replies before that were incorrect. Surely, if you have a frame number on the bike, then that's what you need. Annice at the VMCC Library has no information in that detail.

Have you TRIED the DVLA with what you have? Does the Kithead Trust card give you the engine number? That might persuade them if it's your engine number, i.e. it hasn't been changed.

Should have said, too, that the VMCC could do a Vehicle Inspection Report, and the DVLA would honour that. I did that with my Ner-a-Car, and was able to retain the Reg. No. even though the bike wasn't on their system, and hadn't been used since 1930. I used the Kithead Trust enquiry as well, but the VMCC Inspector reads what's on the bike.
