!979 Bonneville Special Chain
« on: June 13, 2008, 04:09:55 AM »
Hello,

I am trying to find some information on tightening my chain on my 1979 Boneville Special. There seems to be some threading on the axle on the chain side. This appears to be locking up the adjuster? Any suggestions?

It is necessary to loosen the axle nut before you attempt to adjust the chain tension, (and re-tighten the nut again afterwards).

If you don't actually mean the axle thread that the axle nut screws on to, then you will have to give some more information?
Normally the axle is fitted from the left hand side and with the axle nut on the right side of the wheel.

Thanks, I found the adjusters were turned out to the furthest point, so I took a link out the chain. Looks to be ok now. Next problem is changing the speedometer senosor. Mine is a Veglia. My dealer sold me one, it seemed tight to spin with my hand, so he advised to install it. I did, and it bent the arm bad, so he is in the process of sending me a new unit. Is there any trick in installing these?

I'm not exactly sure about the Veglia speedo drive boxes.
I know that occasionally the earlier Smiths drive boxes need a thin shim adding between the hub and the inside of the drive box to stop the it getting forced against the hub too far when the axle nut was tightened?
But the Veglia type may not need that, I really don't know?

Thanks, I got the drive unit placed ok. The cable is spinning if I remove it from under the speedometer. Not sure where to go from here, I assume I need a new speedo? Mine is a Veglia. I wil look at the aftermarket one, but hopefully will find a used Veglia. If anybody has one, let me know.
