Identify these bikes! / 1960's BSA
« on: February 21, 2007, 11:13:55 PM »
I just picked up a bike and the frame number does not match the motor number.  I can read the motor number it is A65T 3802.  According to Bacon’s restoration manual this means that the motor is from a 1966 A65 Thunderbolt.  If the frame number matched the motor it would be A50C-****, but of course it is not.  The problem is I can’t read the entire frame number.  I can read A65?? 9075.  From what I can tell that puts the frame somewhere between 1967 and 1969.  I can make out part of the first letter after the A65 which looks like an upside down capital L.  That makes me believe that it is part of a capital T.  If this is true, how do I tell what the indiscernible second letter is?  It has to be either an A, B or C for 67, 68 or 69 if this assumption is correct.  Were there any changes during these three years that would give me a clue as to what year this frame is?  I have attached some pictures of the bike. Thanks in advance, Rick

British Bikes / BSA A65 Bottom End Rebuild Crankshaft Tolerance
« on: February 26, 2007, 11:28:31 PM »
OK I have been reading everything I can find on rebuilding the bottom end of our friend the BSA A65 motor and have a few questions.

1. How do you measure end play of the crank shaft?
2. I have read about eliminating the shim pack, but I can’t find any info on how to actually do it?

Thanks, Rick

British Bikes / Boyer magnetic rotor removal
« on: February 24, 2007, 08:07:54 AM »
Hello all.  I am a newbie to the world of British bikes and rebuilding a 1966 BSA A65 motor.  I got stuck earlier today.  This bike has a Boyer ignition installed and I can't seem to figure out how to get the magnetic rotor out.  Is the rotor pressed in or is it threaded in?  If it is threaded in is it a right handed thread or a left handed thread?  I have been looking at it for about an hour now and can't seem to figure it out.  If someone could tell me how to get this thing out I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Rick.

Thanks for the response.  I wonder what the chrome underneath will look like when I take the paint off.

British Bikes / 1965 BSA Lightning Tank

I just picked up this bike and have a question about the tank.  I don't think this is the original tank, but I am not sure.  I can not find a picture that matches the badge shape in this year.  Was there a solid red tank for this model in 1965?  I thought they were all chrome and red?  Would someone paint over the chrome or was it available in solid red?

British Bikes / 1965 BSA Lighting Manual

What is the best manual to get for this bike.  I saw the Haynes manual, but they tend to be pretty weka don't they? If some one could point me in the direction of a better manual I would appreciate it. Thanks, Rick.
