Autojumble / Triumph forks needed
« on: April 18, 2007, 01:55:49 AM »
WANTED TRIUMPH FORKS pre-unit forks (sliders and internals will do) needed for my rather immobile '59 Bonneville. Please take a look in the back of the shed and help a sick Triumph back to life.

Thanks in advance

The Classic Biker Bar / Insuring in France - anyone done it???
« on: September 25, 2009, 04:29:01 PM »
I'd like to insure my '65 Bonneville in France. Thing is, I want to keep the UK plate. I've heard it can be done but would like to know if anyone's had any particular experience with this?

B'jezus!!! nothing that bad but when the chain tensioner wore out on my old XS650 (my first big bike), the previous owner had 'rebuilt' it using bent washers and Araldite. The cam chain was so loose that the first time I changed the oil it looked like brown metalflake.  :o

Flushed with my previous success posting a picture I've just dug out another picture of my Grandfather - this time on an older bike. Any more ideas?

American Bikes / Custom/Chopper Resource
« on: February 19, 2008, 04:53:38 AM »
Does anyone know of a good internet resource for 'old school' Harley based choppers/bobbers/custom bikes etc?

It's maybe not exactly the right forum to ask on but it's got to be worth a try....  ;)

British Bikes / Re: Difference betweek Triumph Bonneville models

If you're looking to buy any Bonneville you'd be best advised to buy one of the books written about them. For example, John Nelson's book 'Bonnie' gives a development history and a year by year specification breakdown from the original '59 to the final Harris built models. This way you can check the spec. of a bike you're interested in to make sure it's all there and not a 'bitsa' special, asides from figuring out which model & year would suit you best.

70s Bonnies go from the most revered 1970 model to the least liked (71) then through allot of stages of development (750, electric start etc.), and knowing the 'year' will set you in good stead - the various 'varieties'will be variations on the particular year's specs.

British Bikes / Re: Smiths Chronometric knowledge?

I am going to need to find a S467 107L Smiths Chronometric speedometer for a 1951 Thunderbird I am putting together. I am curious, are there any resources or knowledge out there about all the numbers after these speedometers? do they have to do something with rotation?

it's pretty much a Johnny Cash at the moment. It's a 51, 52, 53...
I've often seen information on Smiths instruments in CD ROM form on Ebay. I was lucky enough to find the 99L I needed for my T120 on the internet, so they're all out there. I think a fair number of these units differed only in detail so if you're clever (or know somebody who is), you could theoretically use another similar speedo and change the face. Bear in mind though that no Smiths Chronometric speedos, tachs or parts are cheap. Good luck

British Bikes / Re: Imp-engined motorcycle project.
« on: July 23, 2009, 03:14:53 PM »
I used to work with a chap who'd put an imp engine into a featherbed frame in the 70s. The main problems were the weight and the radiator. Although the imp engine was light for a car it was still way heavier than an air cooled twin, especially when you factor in the weight of the cooling system (if you could find somewhere to fit the rad in the first place although there's probably a much better choice of rads these days).

Sounds like an interesting project - there was an imp engined Norton for sale on Ebay a year or so ago which looked really nicely done - I wouldn't mind one  ;)

Asides from the usual owners club answers, I've found people dealing in old bike magazines like Classic Bike and OBM will often be able to find articles on rare bikes like your Excelsior. I was looking for information on the Matchless Silver Hawk a couple of years ago and found a really good article in a 1980 back issue of Classic Bike on Ebay. All I had to do was ask, and it only cost £1.50!

Best of luck mate.

British Bikes / Re: Help - engine running on
« on: May 28, 2009, 11:38:23 AM »
I had run on problems a few years ago because I was running plugs that were too hot. The ignition was off but there was still enough heat on the tips of the plugs to ignite the mixture when it compressed. Changing them for cooler ones solved the problem straight off.

British Bikes / Re: Triumph 5T Rev Counter

Jamie you will need to change the timing cover for a rev counter type this is then driven off the exhaust camshaft nut wich you will also have to change to the slotted type for the drive TTS have both listed on ebay

!!! Just make sure you get the correct rev counter timing cover - there is a dynamo version you'll need if your cases are from the early 50s (which it probably is if it's a 5t running a magneto). It's alot of money to spend on the wrong thing  ;)
