British Bikes / Re: What is this BSA Frame??
« on: July 29, 2025, 04:02:21 PM »
Hope your friend wasn't expecting more... a bitza can be fun but very disappointing if it's a surprise.

Leon

Thanks Leon, I think he always realised that it was neither one thing or the other, but the extent of the variety of models included has come as a bit of a surprise.  Interestingly, the log book shows it was first registered in 1934 as an M21 (i.e. 2 years before Val Page joined BSA and designed it!)

Thanks guys.  I have managed to find the frame number hidden away.

The frame number B3-593 from a 2.5HP 1934 BSA Blue Star 250c.

Agree that the plunger section is probably from an A or B series.  The forks actually seem to be C15 and the front wheel is Bantam D1 with the smallest brake imaginable!

Other than that, it seems to be just as it left the factory!

Can anyone shed any light on what this frame is?

The engine is a 1952 M21 that has some AA history. I can see that someone has fitted bantam forks to it, but I dont recognise the frame at all.

The frame number is not legible.

The engine is not a good fit into the frame, but am trying to assist my friend identify what he actually has.

If you need any more pictures or info, please let me know.

Cheers

British Bikes / BSA C15 mainshaft bush. Phosphor Bronze OK or not?

Hello,
the mainshaft bush on my BSA C15 is very worn and is also loose in the timing cover.  I understand that the original bush was sintered bronze - but would it be OK to turn up a new oversize bush in phosphor bronze?

Thanks for your help

British Bikes / Re: what is the purple oil in my BSA RGS
« on: June 13, 2018, 11:28:13 AM »
The plot thickens...

I have looked again at the oil that I drained from the tank.  Whilst it appeared purple when it drained, now it has settled, I can see that the oil is a relatively normal colour, but there is a heavy purple sludge that has settled underneath the oil.  Furthermore, sticking my finger inside the filler cap, and feeling the inner wall of the tank, there is a heavy, very sticky purple residue all over the inside walls of the tank.
I am even more confused than before....

Any ideas?

Thanks L.A.B.  From this  it looks like it is (as suspected by other) that it is simply a synthetic lubricant.  So this being the case, I should be OK to drain, filter clean and fill with some proper mineral oil?

Make sure some posy $%^ has not used  castor oil instead of mineral before you top up with mineral.

I certainly don't believe it to be castor oil.  There has been not even a hint of the distinctive smell I would have expected.

Folks,
i've come across some oil I have never seen before.  I have a recently bought A10 Rocket Gold Star and am changing the oil.  I have drained the tank, but have found that the existing oil is a very bright blue/purple, quite sticky oil. I haven't come across this before.  Does anyone have any ideas what this oil might be and what precautions I might need to take before refilling?
Thanks PeteR

Solution found...  I little more gentle persuasion needed...
Does anyone know where I can get some of the 2 inch wide brake shoes it uses?  Or will it be a case of getting them re-lined?

Aaagh.  Can someone please help me, I am feeling pretty stupid at the moment.
I have an Eddie Dow Duetto front brake fitted to my Gold Star.  I want to check the brake pad condition so have removed the front wheel.  But I cannot for the life of me see how to remove the brake plate from the hub.
I would have expected a central nut holding it on, but there is not one there.
Is it a press fit?  I have given it a bit of gentle persuasion but no sign of any movement and do not want to force anything.

Does anyone have any experience of these?

Thanks in advance for any support.

P.S. Will take a photo and add to post.
