Thanks for the advice so far. I will measure it after I get home tomorrow night. What sort of bike would an MU 42 headlamp go on, and why might it have a french brand light in it?

Identify these bikes! / Headlamp - what's it from?

Hi,

This headlamp has a Lucas ammeter and switch plus a Marchall light unit with a chromed M shield within the light itself and a large M shield on the front of the glass itself. The bulb is a massive job with half silvering on it. The wiring loom includes a speedo light with Smith's style bulb holder retainer

Any ideas of its origins will be welcomed.

Regards, Will

Identify these bikes! / Help! - Interesting Crank, but what is?
« on: February 23, 2009, 12:25:34 PM »
Does anyone know what this crank might be from. The bore is about 62.8mm, and the stroke around 90mm (hard to measure), suggesting about 500-550cc overall. OHV flat top pistons and the flywheel has been nicely polished at some time. Note the big end caps are fixed with studs rather than bolts, and the crank is three part. The crank casting is marked Qualcast. All info welcome.

British Bikes / Help - engine running on
« on: May 28, 2009, 11:11:03 AM »
Hi,

what causes engines to run on after cutting the ignition? My pre unit Triumph is doing this. I have tried changing the timing, even quite radically, to no effect. The spark plugs are the right sort of colour, pale brown electrodes, suggesting that the mixture is about right.

Does anyone know the difference between e.g. a Champion N3C and an N4C? I want to know which runs hotter. Regards, Will

In my 1960 pre unit 650 triumph there are two aluminium sleeves about 100mm long. Should these be a tight fit, so staying near the top of the slider, or should they move around (up and down within the slider? All info welcome.

Thanks for that. I haven't had an old Triumph since the early 70's so can't really remember what it was like. Engine bolts are tight and correct, and I will recheck the head steady.

British Bikes / help - vibrations on old twin 650 engine
« on: May 06, 2009, 12:30:34 PM »
I have rebuilt my T120 engine on a bike that I acquired in bits. It is vibration free up to nearly 3000 rpm, then vibrates a lot. I know that there are inevitable dynamic vibes from all old twins, but it seems more than I would expect.

The new pistons are about 4 grams heavier (each) than the old ones.

I also noticed that the clutch runs very slightly out of true.

Would either of these affect it, and what else should I look at?

Yes the sludge trap was cleaned out - it had decades of gunk in it. And yes I had the oil seal conversion done. I also put a remote cartridge oil filter on. The pressure holds up really well now even at very low revs.

I also put electronic (Boyer Bransden) mag replacement ignition on rather than getting the mag rebuilt, 12V electrics so the lights are great ( with an old style Lucas Mini sealed unit halogen headlight), and a twin leading shoe front brake. The bike is for riding, not for show to rivet counters. Nothing that can't be reversed of course - no new holes or weldling!!

Will
