British Bikes / C15 No Start then no kickstart return.
« on: April 21, 2011, 06:19:49 PM »
Hi All.

After a few months in the shed, i charged my battery and started up the C15 to get it ready for its MOT this weekend. It was working fine the last time i rode it so i thought this would be straight forward.

I kicked it over and i had a bang in the exhaust and then nothing. I checked the spark and this is very strong and consistant. I took the carb apart and cleaned it, put it back turned on the fuel, depressed the tickler then i got a bang, then nothing again.  The plug looked a bit wet so i cleared the fuel from carb, cleaned plug and gave it a kick. Low and behold the kickstart didnt return. This looks like a broken spring, but i am still at a loss with the carb flooding.. I have checked float and needle and all seems well....

Has anybody had these problems???? and can anybody help?? >:(

thanks

British Bikes / BSA C15 wiring burning and melting electrics!!!!!!
« on: October 04, 2010, 06:32:58 PM »
Hi.

I have a C15 on which i installed a 6V electrical ingnition kit last year. A few months back my back brake switch had broken. It looked like it had melted and taking off the seat i could see all the electrical wires had melted together. I spliced new wires and put a universal brake light switch on and that worked ok for a bit until i was at a junction and could smell smoke and noticed the switch was burning!!!

I replaced the switch and went for a ride. I got back home and got off the bike. I nipped in for a few seconds but was startled to see smoke coming from under the seat. I ran out and could see the wires RED HOT so wrapped a towel round them!!

Do i need a new rectifier? Is the rectifier at fault?? Is this a result of the electronic ignition?? Not being electronically minded i have no idea on what would cause such a power surge to burn/melt the wire coating and tape??

British Bikes / BSA C15 Cant Select 4th Gear!!
« on: June 26, 2010, 05:15:47 PM »
Hi.

When riding i cannot get into 4th gear!! It just wont happen. I've tried all manner of 'gear changing' styles but she will not find 4th!!! It means vibration and being left behind on runs with friends!! The gearbox is well lubricated

ANY IDEAS??!!!

British Bikes / Re: BSA C15 Sportsman '66 -'67. Correct Carb???
« on: June 23, 2010, 10:03:26 PM »
Hi all.

I stripped the carb and cleaned it properly. I lowered the needle to the lowest possition. It started first time. I did a quick 10 miles today and the plug was dry as a bone. That's the carb problem dealt with.

thanks all. ;)

Hi.

After stripping the carb, i have discovered the pilot jet, main jet and needle jet are the correct numbers for my bike (as per Rupert Ratio manual) . The parts are old and have some kind of light green residue/corrosion on them.. I still cannot get a decent tick over and the carb is still burning rich which usually ends up in a flooded plug. I have spent days on tuning the carb and i still cant get the mixture right.

Would an amal 'repair kit' help? Or Is it worth going to the trouble of getting a new carb?

thanks.

British Bikes / BSA C15 Sportsman '66 -'67. Correct Carb???
« on: June 02, 2010, 09:47:55 PM »

After correcting ignition problems, i have now turned my attention to the carb. This has been burning rich since i first got it. I have been plagued with a bad to none existent tick over. I have spent hours tuning the carb but to no end. The Engine is a C15SG *** on as 66 plate?? The carb on it is a 376/231. This is for a Franny B Falcon as far as i am aware! Would a 2 stroke carb affect performance in such a way

The Amal site doesnt list a carb for a Sportsman. Does anybody know the Correct carb for this Model???

thanks again

British Bikes / Re: BSA C15 Non Starter!!!!! HELP NEEDED!!

Thanks to all posters.

Hi got a new plug cap, checked my wiring, mended loose connection and found an OLD Champion Plug that i hadnt tried. Hey presto, It started.
I got a decent idle but at medium revs, there was popping and back firing in the silencer!!

The timing shouldnt have moved since the installation of the electronic ignition! I can only put it down to the spill my mate had. Its a Pazon System so it has the capacity to advance or retard on the ignition plate. I'm sure i the timing is set at 7mm BTDC. Is it wise to adjust the timing by advancing or retarding the ignition plate or is it best to re-check the timing again?

cheers

Got a new plug, a new 5k resistor cap. Have fitted them and still get a weak and intermittant spark so the Engine wont start!

Could it be an earthing issue? All the connections seem fine. I am pulling my hair out now..

thanks

Hi all.
thanks for the replies!

I put a new plug in. As i held the plug cap ready to check the spark i switched the ignition on with the key. This gave me a shock!

I put the new plug against the engine with both electrodes touching the engine, kicked it over and i did get sparks in the plug gap (all be it weak..) I then replaced the plug and cap and kicked the engine over, it fired about 4 times then died again. And now nothing. The new plug is known the work, but this again was sparking to the engine when a few cm's away!

I am going to replace the ignition plug lead tomorrow and see if that does anything. The horn and lights are working fine and the ignition is electronic so i cant understand why the spark is weak and intermittant...

British Bikes / BSA C15 Non Starter!!!!! HELP NEEDED!!
« on: May 16, 2010, 08:38:34 PM »
Hi

3 weeks ago i installed an electronic ingnition unit on my C15. The timing was spot on and it didnt give me any problems. The other week a friend of mine (who rides a jap bike) had a go on the c15 and came off it!! It hit the ground hard.

The bike ran for about 15 miles after that but it konked out when i was on the way back from work. I now cannot start the bike. I have tested for a spark, but when i place the plug on the crank case and kick it over, there is no spark between the plug electrodes!! However, if i move the plug away from the engine (not touching it) I get a spark from the plug to the engine. Is this normal?? Is this causing it not to start or should i be looking elsewhere.   ???

thanks

Paulo
