Most likely cause of jamming is burred first tooth on the starter quadrant .......first meshing tooth should have a sharp point .....when it gets burred ,the traditional cure was to grind it off and sharpen the next tooth...........ditto the mainshaft ratchet gear ...it should have pointed teeth ..........I d also add ,you never stab at the pedal, mesh the gears first before applying pressure ...........The 1956 on  AMC box has the Norton style kickstart with a sprag engaging an internal rack ......reliable and near abuse proof.

Ive collected lots of M20 and M21 motors to make a Gold Star style OHV  motor and fit it into an early Kawasaki frame I have ........but ,at my age , reality has finally struck home ......no more bikes for me ....enough already.

The toolbox is correct for the plunger frame ,its odd its mounted cockeyed .........BSA had the forge shop to make the frame ,a part of their heavy weapons plant..........BSA also drop forged the flywheels ,even the lowly side valves had forged steel flywheels........in fact you can make a very capable OHV from a BSA M20 or M21.

The CP Burman boxes dont normally chip gears ,as the gears are quite soft to avoid breakage ........the worst can happen is tooth breakage caused by worn layshaft bushes..........good news is millions of these boxes were made in WW2 ,and NOS parts are cheaply available .........be aware though there are several changes in the whole gearset made in WW2 to meet criticism of too wide gaps in the ratios............In general ,there are prewar trials ratios, post war trials ratios, and standard road gears.

The motor leans forward because the original motor had the magneto at the front ,with space at the back of the crankcase ...........the mega dollar BSA ohv V twins use the same frame backbone ....J 12 and Y 13 ...and sell for mucho dollars

Its not surprising the motor has been replaced ......the mid 30s BSA singles were not a very good motor ,in fact they were crap .......a very poor effort from such a big maker............which is why they brought in Val Page to redesign all the BSA singles to be decent bikes.......Yes ,I had a couple of 1934 Blue Stars ,good gearbox ,crap motor.

Pull the gearbox to bits .....the whole joy of old bikes is pulling them to bits and putting them back together again.

A pre 36 maggdyno will have a ring cam ,and quite often these rings are very worn, altering the timing adversely..........you cant regrind the ring ,as its case hardened ,and once the hardening is worn thru ,very soft steel.

Probably best to be sure the magneto advance diection is still the same direction the maker intended ......I can tell by the change in exhaust note  if ignition advance is right.............the army bike instructors used to do a trick of flooding the M20 carby and kicking the bike on full advance .......the carby would catch fire and they would pretend not to notice ........then when the fire was getting a bit big, retard the mag ,kick the bike and suck all the flame into the carb.......they reckoned that the motor would always start with the carby on fire.

A late A10 should be alternator with the 4 spring Triumph cluctch....not the six spring pressed tin BSA clutch...........anyhhoo,people replace the clutch with a Suzuki one ,cant recall which ,but the swap is well documented.........Incidentally the dragging clutch will smash your gearbox gears apart.,and sharp gear chips will score the shafts.............To cure this problem ,I fitted an army beezer clutch ,this freed easily, but tended to slip under power.,just had to ride the bike sedately .............Anyhoo,when I sold the bike ,it lasted only one day , and was on the news that night..........he tried to pass a bus on the inside as it turned left .

Fail to start can also be flooding of a hot motor ...........I diagnose start problems with a can of starting spray ......this stuff will fire with flooding or with fuel starvation .......but it wont fire with no spark.

I recall when we were kids ,a friend in the next street had one of these .........he couldnt get it going ,ever .......we used to go to his place get the bike going ,race around the streets on his fathers mower petrol until it ran out ..........there was a school and a church across from his house ,and these people didnt appreciate speedway riding in their grounds. ...........I had a terrific crash on it and tore the inside out of my knee.

The exhaust seat has been well recut (several times) and pocketed ......not that it matters for road use ..........however it means that a new seating ring cant be fitted without major expense..........If your timing is extreme ,you need to be sure the valves wont collide ............Must say it seems strange to me that Burlen and others sell replica Amal carbs for astronomical sums ,when you can buy new carbs for 15 quid on ebay or temu.
