British Bikes / R.E. crusader 1961
« on: April 12, 2007, 06:25:41 AM »
I just replaced the big end shells on the above bike. The end cap was torqued up to the correct setting and proper assembly grease was used. The engine has been put back together and it started up very well and was quiet. Now it seems to have a tight spot and when i try to kick it over the clutch slips (new plates).I can still turn it over with a bit of a push on the alternator bolt, but i can not kick it, as soon as it reaches compression it tightens up again. Is this normal and will it just be a case of trying to start her and then waiting for everything to loosen up or have i tightend up the bearings up too much ! 250in/ lbs.
Many thanks.

Many thanx for the replies.I still have had no joy. :-[The engine still back fires through the carb occasionally but apart from that nothing. There is a spark at the plug(nice and blue) and petrol is going through(plug nice and wet,too wet .)
Any more thoughts or ideas would be most welcome,i know i should have stayed with AMC bikes ! but that is another topic.

Many thanx to all those that took time to reply.
The stator plate is actualy the auto advance unit, my mistake, the spindle is timed to the cams and  crank as per B.M.S. manual. My problem is how do i set the points cam in relation to the piston for the points to be set correctly. All very confusing,if only they put a dam keyway in it would be so much more easier.
Over to you !

The crusader is nearly finnished(wahoo !) but i have a small prob. it won't start ! I have removed and replaced the points stator plate and spindle from the oil pump, one question is there a way to fit this or is it just pushed on,there is no keyway for it to slide on and the books say nothing about it.The bike is just kicking over with the occasional backfire through the carb. Have i got it 180 deg. out ?
Many thanx and i hope you lot out there can help.

Has anyone any idea of the correct paint colours for a '61 royal enfield crusader.
I have seen one in black but nothing else apart from the sports with the chrome tanks.
cheers.

I now have the thing started ( quite well to ) it ticks over quietly but as soon as you pull the throttle back it makes a horrible noise.I have checked the tappets again and although they have set ok the pushrods seem to have quite a bit of play in them, could the cams be 'nacked ?
The noise is not like a rumbling but a more severe rocker noise from that area.
Could the big end be gone ??   rockers shot ??
Any thoughts much welcome.   cheers. ???

British Bikes / matchless piston rattle
« on: January 03, 2007, 04:51:42 AM »
My matchless 350 has had some work done on the engine and the piston rattles when warm.It has had a full rebore (200 miles ago ) the little end has been replaced and the big end checked.
The rattle appears when warm and doing 30mph then disapears at 40mph , i have not tried faster as still running in.
Could the conrod be bent i was assured it wasn't,does the bike need running in properly ?  i have run to the end of options/ideas  ? ???
Any help please !!!!

Thanx, but it looks nothing like that !.It has the standard sort of backplate and the sensor is just fitted to the side on the plate. The rota looks like the normal rota but has two prongs on opposite sides.
It just has the markings DG stamped on it.
The sensor has got a magnet in the middle of it.
I can't understand how you would set it up with two markers on it.
Over to you

???Hi,the matchbox g3 350 is nearly up and running !
But i need some help with the elec's.The points have been replaced by what i think is a hall effect system(magnet and rotor ) the question is how do i set up the timming as the rotor has two prongs on it so i can't set anything to  tdc.
Any help would be much appreciated as summer is nearly over and the thing needs to be ridden!! :)

British Bikes / matchless 350 rattle
« on: May 24, 2006, 04:56:15 AM »
Help ! my old matchy has a rattle that is driving me mad.
It has had a new rebore, piston ,rings. The little end was  good and valves nice. The valve springs have been replaced along with the collars. The rattle happens on fast idle and then somtimes on a quick de-acceleration.
Any ideas would be good.Over to anybody.
