Help ! my old matchy has a rattle that is driving me mad.
It has had a new rebore, piston ,rings. The little end was  good and valves nice. The valve springs have been replaced along with the collars. The rattle happens on fast idle and then somtimes on a quick de-acceleration.
Any ideas would be good.Over to anybody.

Hi brooksie,

It may be worth checking the fit of your carburetter slide, as if this is sloppy it can rattle.

Use a stethoscope or a piece of wooden dowel rod held against the outer ear and parts of the engine to pinpoint the location of the noise.

Please post when you find the problem.

Good luck.

A.

A word of advice - don't try this when riding!  ;D

I had a 1953 G3LS jampots, dualseat, from new.
After a couple of years, a tappet noise drove me mad.
It was not always there, & would come on quite loud.
The manual said, adjust the clearance to NIL, warm.
I tried every temp from slightly warm to very warm. no joy.
Eventualy i spotted that one of the cams was kicking sideways when lifting.
Must have had a slope. Shimming the end float cured the problem.
A quick story, in 1952 a  hard up mate wanted to sell me his 1,000 black shadow for £100.00, could not aford it. :-(
