BSA STATIC TIMING

I'm working to get a 1968 Lightning with points running.  I don't have the special tool that locks into the flywheel to hold the engine at the right point to set advance timing.  I would use a degree wheel to accomplish that but don't know what degree setting to use.

The full advance setting is 34 deg btdc but I don't know if this is the place to set the engine for static timing.  (For Triumphs you take full advance and subtract 2 times the number stamped on back of the aau)

I will use a strobe once I get it going.

Yes that method should work, as one AAU degree = 2 crankshaft degrees, and as you intend to strobe the ignition anyway, the initial static timing position wouldn't need to be set that accurately, although generally the best way to do it is to lock the AAU in the fully advanced position and then set the timing at the fully advanced figure of 34 deg. BTDC.
