BSA B32 gearbox/clutch problems help please
« on: May 05, 2009, 11:50:59 PM »

Hi there

I have a 1948 bsa b32, It has a different gearbox to the 49 onwards.
I have started the bike for the first time in a couple of years. at first the clutch (6 spring) was spungy and adjusted as much as it would go.
It still seemed that it would not disengage the engine properly.
It was really difficult to get it into gear. when I got it into gear i released the clutch and there was a grinding sound instead of forward motion.
also next time i tried to start it the kickstart disengaged halfway through kicking causing me pain.

Is there anyone who can offer advice? Is it the clutch? The gearbox looks fine through the inspection plate.

It certainly sound like a clutch problem, & this is definitely the place to start.
Since the bike has stood for a couple of years, it may be that the clutch is rather gunged up with old oil & muck. The first thing I would do is dismantle the clutch, clean all the parts well & examine them. If the clutch is gunged up this could explain a lot of the problem, but you must check the centre & the drum for notching. All the grooves the clutch plates slide in should have smooth sides, if they are notched (serated looking) then you must either file them smooth or if very bad think about replacements.
Hope this is helpful, & good luck. ;)
