Velocette !!!!!
« on: November 21, 2009, 02:37:22 PM »
When my 1935 Velocette Mac is in neutral and the engine ticking over why does it sometimes drop in to gear. The clutch has been totally refurbished and is in proper adjustment. Any idea's and advice gratefully received. :(

If I remember rightly your 1935 MAC has a long gear lever connecting to a rather exotic rod connection to the rear of the gearbox.
I suspect everything at the moment has worn to that lovely "loosie goosie" stage where it is feather light to use but not that worn you think you should do something about it.
Unfortunately it has worn to the extent that the vibration of the idling engine is enough to sometimes cause the lever to drop down and put the bike in to gear.
When new there is enough friction in all the various connections and bushes etc, that you don't have a problem but age and general wear has loosened everything up so the issue arises.
It looks like you can have a fun winter cleaning things up and making the system a little stiffer as it was when the bike was new.
Cheers,

Clearly it's knackered beyond repair, so PM your address and I'll do you a favour by taking it off your hands. Can't be fairer than that, can I? ;)

Thanks for your interest and comments, how-ever, my bike has the gear change lever at the front of the box but it may well suffer from looseness in the joints! I'll check it out and tighten up anything that I can before dismantling the box. If you would like some pictures of the bike post your email address and I'll send some. Thanks again.

I think Rex has the right idea but I got in first. Once we have settled ownership between us we'll tell you what address to send the bike to.
