Excelsior

Please can anyone positively ID  this bike. It is not mine but a relative's from abroad. I took the pictures but after reading this forum realised I should have taken down serial numbers.

The owner says it was a  1949 model but also said something about 1951 (there are language issues). The engine is a Mark 10. He wants to know the specifications of the exhaust system so he can get one made (pictures etc)

Anyone any idea? Thanks

His Excelsior is a James Captain with a Villiers 6E 197cc engine in it.
NOT 1949 as the plunger rear springing didn't come in til 1951 or so.
Accurate dating requires the frame number.
For full details try the "simplywizard" site. Off the top of my head it is www.simplywizard.co.uk or something like close to that. It is the ultimate James site and has pictures, specifications, etc, etc.
Cheers, Bob

Hi Carl, I think this bike is older than you think it is.Excelsior made a Talisman in 1949 with a 244cc two stroke engine. In 1953 they came out with the Talisman Sport. In 1959 the engine size went to 328cc.Excelsior built bikes  for the military, a 98cc Welbike and the Sprite for the Corgi company. There was a 98cc Consort. These were from the war years,39-45.Good luck.  Sparks
