What bike is this?
« on: August 28, 2006, 04:57:04 PM »
I've got another one for you all....!  IT has been emailed me to me by George (the boy in the photo) who places the picture at about 1939.  I'm stumped as to what this is.  Can anyone help?

Cheers

Nigel.

Hi Nigel, I think it is a 1935 Matchless G3.  Sparks

Having looked closely at picture, rear brake right-hand side flat tank, engine I'm fairly certain is a Swiss MAG motor.  This was a proprietary brand (similar to Blackburn, JAP, Villiers, etc.).  One just had to make a frame and then stick your name on the petrol tank.  I'll take a guess that it's a late '20s, possibly German (Condor or Standard) but these were used by Belgian and I think French manufacturers.
Regards, Geoff

Not sure about the Matchless, but it does certainly look like a Standard.  I've attached a picture of a 1931 497cc Standard with a MAG engine and if you ask me it looks like we've got a match.

It certainly does appear to have a MAG engine:

Here is another MAG fitted in a TWN Triumph that seems near enough identical engine to the one in George's photo Triumph:http://www.david-rdm.de/2.html
