Need some help please
« on: June 03, 2007, 08:47:09 PM »
Hi everyone,

I need some help in identifying my granddad's bike. I know that the picture was taken in the late 1940's. I have tried to find a bike similiar to it in your extensive archives but to no avail.

Thank you

Martin

After some research I have been looking at a Matchless model V2  circa 1928.

If there is any Matchless AJS guru's could they confirm if I am heading in the right direction.

Thank you

Martin

The Matchless V/2 was an overhead valve 495cc bike. The bike in the picture looks like the sidvalve T/3 (347cc) or T4 (498cc). These were first shown in November 1928 for the 1929 Matchless range. This looks correct although appears to be missing a front mudgaurd stay.

If the lady in the picture is your Grandmother she must have loved your Grandfather a great deal to stay with him, she appears to be sitting on the rear rack without a seat!  :o

Hi Martin

The bike in the pic not is a Matchless, is a 1930 Triumph C.S.D model,  548.5 cc of 3.49 HP.

Well sorry old thing but this is identical to a Matchless T/3 or T/4 in every respect (except the mudgaurd stay of course). But ho hum.  :P

I think i'm with davide here....
The matchless has a forward mounted magneto and this one certainly hasn't.  I'd go for the Triumph!

Nigel.

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for all your help, just got back from France today and read all your replies.

It was very interesting to read that it is a triumph, the picture of the truimph CSD certinly looks like the bike my grandad is riding.

Are these bike really rare as I can not find any information on the web?

Again thank you for your help.

Regards

Martin

Yes, Triumph Model CN (500cc) or CSD (550cc). The extra 50cc in the bore cannot be detected. Only the engine number would tell us that. I can't see enough detail or the full Dublin registration number to say whether it is 1929 or 1930.

Hello folks,

I would be interested in knowing the value of a 1929 Triumph CN, as I have one in extremely good condition and shes a cracking runner. I am considering selling it to a friend but I have no idea at all of its true value. Can anyone shine a light on this subject?

I would definately go with Triumph. The silencer is uniquely Triumph, as is the timing cover shape - you can see the front of it past the riders leg. The forks are also the same pattern as Triumph used as well
