Prospective BSA A65 twin purchaser
« on: July 17, 2005, 02:04:32 PM »
Hello everybody, the name here is Chris and I live in Wasilla, Alaska, 60Km north of Anchorage.
I have long been wanting to get a British '60's twin, not anything museum quality but something different for those long summwer days. Well, they are not a common commodity here in the great white north, so when a 1962 BSA A65 came on the market, I decided to go have a look. I'll describe what I found to the best of my abilities and look forward to any and all comments.
The owner called it a restoration. It's not even close, it's more like a Frankenbike. The wheels and brakes are from a Yammy XS500, I think the turn signals are also XS500 items. The tank has been painted, and not very well, but the BSA tank emblems are still there. The pipes are about mid-level I guess, not low, with smallish peashooter type mufflers that are not very effective. The seat looks to be redone. The handlebars, frame, oil tank and engine appear to be BSA itiems, the carbs are Amals, with ticklers,
I'm looking for guidance here. Is this bike worth bothering to bring back to a more original form? The wheels at least have to go.
Comments anyone?

Chris,
If you decide to return the bike to a more standard form then it looks as if you are going to need practically everything except a frame and engine etc. judging by the photo, even the seat and tank look as if they are from a later model, so will cost quite a bit to do unless you can find a lot of used parts.
If you are happy to use the bike as it is then possibly that would be the best option? You could always change the wheels though?

Thanks for the quick reply!
I've been on the internet looking for info on the bike, and it would appear that you're right-the bike seems to be a collection of leftover parts or somebodies idea of a custom. There doesn't seem to be an actual model that corresponds to the bike. I guess it would work as a rider.
Some people start their restorations as a box or two of parts or a bare frame with a broken motor, so it would be somewhat of a head start there.
Alright, back to the searching.  ;D

I would expect the bike would have originally looked more like this:

the carbs are Amals, with ticklers,
If it is a '62 model then there should only be one carb.
So possibly either the cylinder head has been changed or maybe the engine isn't original either?
