Over 25 year Tax Exemption?

Help, I'm new to vintage bikes.
Are motorcycles over 25 years old, exempt from road tax?. If so do we need to obtain any special authorisation or fill in a SORN?

Hi Arrow.
All bikes must either be taxed or SORNED - but vehicles constructed before 1st January 1973 are eligible for free tax.  i.e. you still have to get a tax disc, but it is free of charge if it is made before 1/1/73.  The post office will be able to advise as and when you take your tax form in.  Obviously you still need the usual MoT and insurance too.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for the useful information.
My bike is still in the course of assembly, and cannot as yet get MOT and insurance.
Do you know if it needs to be SORNED, even though its still in bits.

True, unless the bike was not taxed on 31 January 1998 and hasn't been taxed since that date in which case SORN does not apply.

This answer has made my day. As my bike has been untaxed and unused for the 20 years.
I will now not need a SORN.

Is the bike's registration document the new 'V5C' type? If it is still on the old V5 then you need to send it to the DVLA to be exchanged for the new type (it's a good idea to keep a photocopy of the old document).

You can ask the DVLA to return the old V5 if you want to.

very interesting ???what will hapen if you chose not to send your old V5 to the DVLA
If your bike was not taxed before 1998 and you send in your old V5 for the new ,one does thet mean the bike will be sorned.
or does the 1998 rule apply with the the new V5C
meaning  new V5C but no sorn

My reply to this message seems to have deleted itself (unless I accidentally hit the 'Remove' button as I tried to include some extra information)!

So I will answer again that any vehicles still registered on a V5 need to have it changed to a V5C. I originally said that entitlement to the registration number could be lost if this was not done, but reading through the DVLA website info it would appear that is not totally correct but someone owning a vehicle registered on an old V5 could still have problems.

But no change to the other info, so if the vehicle was not taxed either on or after 31.1.98 SORN does not apply even if the V5 is changed for a V5C.
