Silver Jubilee Bonneville valve timing
« on: May 16, 2006, 05:58:56 AM »
Hi, Does anyone have any info on aligning the timing pinions on a 1977 SIlver Jubilee Bonneville? There are multiple 'dots'  on both inlet and exhaust pinion wheels and I've no idea which ones are the right ones to align. Has anyone worked their way through this problem before?

Thanks for your thoughts....

If you had a workshop manual then this wouldn't be such a problem as this information is given.

Various workshop manuals show a diagram of the timing mark settings rather than a written description, so I will describe what it shows:

The crankshaft gear should have a tooth marked (with a dot?) which should be set to the 12 O'clock position, the intermediate gear should have three sets of marks, two dots (or two dashes?) close together, they sit each side of the marked crank gear tooth, another dot and dash mark together, the DASH mark should line up with the 'B' mark on the INLET cam gear, the other single dot on the intermediate gear lines up with the 'A' mark on the EXHAUST cam gear.

You may have to keep removing the intermediate gear to rotate the cam gears to get everything into the correct position. When you have done that, turn the engine over carefully to check that everything is set correctly (pistons are not hitting the valves etc.).

You will notice that once the engine is turned over that the marks will no longer line up! This is normal, the marks only lining up again every 94 engine revolutions.

If your timing marks are not as I have described them, then please say what you have got as the marks changed from engine number CX06001. Also if you are still not quite sure I can email you a copy of the diagram.
