1960-70s moped,
« on: August 05, 2010, 09:07:46 PM »
please help, in about 1970, i got hold of an old moped, i'me sure it was a triumph whisper, (not sure) but it was bottle green, and had peddles, and a small engine,  anyway i claim to have had the first sort of mountain bike in the world, why, well i was 11 at the time, and me dad woud"nt buy me a racer, (like all me mates had) " to dangerous: so i come accross this old moped on a debri some-where, and started stripping it down to the skeloton, with just the brakes, (both drum mind) and a bit springy saddle, and the peddles, the only downfall on my contraption, was the small (crank)the chain went round to drive the thing, when we went on bike rides to crosby & formby and that, i would always be laggiing behind, due to the wieght of the \thing/ and the small crank, one advantage was the stopping power, disadvantage catching the boys up, and being pulled by the puzzelled police at the time, (it was found to be legal)  but it did give me legs like gerd muller (1966 west german footballer) but anyway, can anyone put a name on the first mountain bike in the world, any help most welcome. thank's chris gray, liverpool.

I had a moped in the 60's. I was not old enough to ride it one the road so when I came out of school I used to push it down to some wast land to ride it. I thought I went well at 30 mph. Mine was a Phillips Panda                                               http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/photos-cars2/phillips_panda_moped_95.htm

Me too, but mine was an early 60s model with tele forks and (IIRC) a S/A rear end.
Actually I bought it as spares for my Morman Nippy, as they both had Villiers 3K engines, but then thought I'd try the teles on the leading-linked Nippy. They worked too, if a little soft.
Happy simple days, the 1970s..... ;)
