8 in. TLS Brakeplate ID?
« on: January 15, 2011, 09:35:42 PM »
HI All,
Can anyone ID the intended fitment of this 8 inch TLS brakeplate?
It looks to be of the same manufacture as the "Taylor Dow" brakeplate on my SR, same levers and fittings
It will not fit a BSA 8in. single sided drum !
It will not fit a BSA 190mm hub !

The brakeplate anchors onto a raised lug on the fork leg (like a late A10). But the outer appearnce is very different to the TD brake I have on a full width hub wheel
The spindle hole measures 19.8mm
The shoes stick out 40mm (app) from the lip on the plate,
48mm from the piece that goes against the wheel bearing
The recess that fits over the wheel hub is 58mm dia (app)

The last pic shows the plate compared to the one that fits the 8in. single sided hub

Taylor-Dow made at least four versions of their tls brakeplate that I know of. I think yours is the one that fits the full-width composite hub with the raised spoke flange as used on the 650 Triumphs for 1966/67 with a sls brakeplate. This same hub was used in the following three years with BSA/Triumphs own tls brakeplate which worked very well and made the TD conversion obsolete.
By the way, if you want to be rid of yours, let me know! ;)

Cheers
Andy

HI Andy,
Thanks for the reply,
I had eliminated Norton last night after some googling, I saw that they have a steel peg which goes into a slot in the fork leg
The brakeplate would be available for a swop for one that fits a BSA single sided 8in. wheel as in the last photo
or one for a 190mm BSA hub
One can only ask???

Cheers

HI Andy and All,
I called to a chap today who has heaps of Triumph stuff
Yes the brakeplate fits Triumph wheels, apparently the widened the shoes in 63 or so So this fits from 63 onwards
