If you have a look at the pictures on this site on Rudges, it looks like a Rude Multi with the external pilgrim or Best& Lloyd oil pump.

The motor is definitely not a Rudge Multi - but I see where the confusion arises. The green Rudge labelled a Multi in the gallery http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/pictures/1924-rudge-multi/ is in fact a four-valve four-speed, not a Multi.

I think Roger is correct re the external oil pump, which would put the motor in the same period as the green bike (1924 - about 1928), but I think it's probably a 500 rather than 350. The 350s of this era have the tappets fore and aft (thus spayed push rods, wide at the bottom), while the 500s have the tappets side by side, so when viewed from the side of the bike one of the push rods is hidden behind the other.

So maybe something like http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/pictures/rudge-whitworth-1927/ or http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/pictures/1925-rudge-4-speed/ . The people over at the Rudge Club can probably date the motor more precisely from its engine number.

hi Leon,
I think your right that it is a 500cc,and it looks like the witworth 1927.It has the push rods side by side.
I will see if I can find the engine number on it
