Gold Star fork slider
« on: April 08, 2011, 08:30:04 PM »
Hi Folks,
When I apply the front brake on my Gold Star the top of the front wheel visibly tips to the right, and if I'm riding it the bike pulls to the right as well.
Holding the brake on and pushing forward I can see the r/h slider tip back on the fork leg. In an effort to cure this I have changed:
Fork stanchions, bushes, front wheel spindle, wheel bearings and tried two other second hand r/h fork sliders, all to no avail.
I've taken the slider to an engineering firm but they say it can't be bored.
The only person I've found with a supply of new sliders is not selling them separately, he wants to sell me a complete set of forks for £900.
SRM are going to  sell their own fork leg assemblies soon but they are going to cost £649.
The above is a lot on money when all I need is one slider.
Any ideas anyone?

Sid

Bit of a long shot, but have you examined the forks springs closely.
And tried swapping them side to side ?
Likewise the damper units.
Measured them against new specs ?

Or put an equally "worn" slider on the left side ? !!

What oil and quantity are you putting in the fork legs ?
Same both sides ?

Ain't old bikes fun...

Haven't tried using a worn l/h slider though in desperation I might but when I'm thrashing into a bend I'd find it more comforting to know the forks are in good order.
The SRM forks sound good, they're 35mm dia all the way down and come with teflon bushes and two way damping but £650 is a bit of a wallet trembler.

I think R means to swap the slider to see if the "tipping wheel" goes with it, rather than to swap it and use a  worn one forever.
 ;)

Put a set of cheap B31 forks on it. :)

Ooops sorry.
I've done that. I don't think there's a combination of stanchion, bush and slider I haven't tried.
Stafford Show coming up I'll have to see what I can find there.
