BSA A7 1947 LONG STROKE gearbox problem

Hi everybody , since I bought this motorcycle Iīm having this problem, and I wonder if anyone can help me.
When I kickstart it 3 or 4 times the pedal gets stucked and only after I  engage 1st or other and move the wheel a little and  pressing the kick pedal it gets free again. I donīt understand anything about gearboxes.
please help me.

It is a problem I too have suffered with BSA's, I would be interested in a definative answer too!

My A65 rocket is prone to do the same but, I find if I use the clutch to allow the kick start to move of the high point about 30deg it seems to start fine,

This is quite a common problem which is caused by wear on the first couple of teeth on the kick start quadrant.

gearbox had been completely replaced with new parts back in 1978, still did it and still does it now but has never got any worse.

Very strange Welsh Wizard, I have now replaced the quadrant and ratchet gear in three of these gearboxes and every one was cured.

Revband, as I use the method of slightly stroking it before giving a kick it has acted as a anti theft a few times. Also a few of the BSA's also did it when new while being tested at the factory back in the late 60's, not sure what they did about them then as it was in a different part of the factory.

.It could be that machining was getting a bit rough towards the end, because the gun barrels at Reditch were not always cleaning up on final grinding, same was happening with R3 cranks and other bits and pieces, one of the down side to piece work in those days.

Most brit bikes with the quadrant style kickstart have a habit of doing this.

The same here. My friends got BSAs and a HRD with the same problem. Since I replaced the ratchet gear , I will try to replace the quadrant and end this annoying problem.
