anyone out there any ideas to help me . my c15  engine has been stripped (valve timing was out-- now corrected) i have fitted new valve guides and reground the valves. its now back in the bike and i am at my wits end why it wont start. there is good compression(ihave used a compression tester) i have a good spark,and i am sure the ignition timing is correct.(i have checked it that many times i am still doing it in my sleep)the only thing i,m not sure of is the carb (i only have one cable which is the throttle cable, the other hole has a spring loadedpush down bar / bolt( it doesn,t look like its got a choke to me)it is spitting at times but  justwill not go. it has been dated by the b.s.a. club as 1965.any comments would be appreciated. oh there is a fault on the engine where the dizzy fits in not a crack but looks like its been damaged.

Depending what carb is fitted that push down bar may well be the choke, have you ensured that the timing is set on the compression stroke? you won't be the first.

Hi mossy, This is interesting, I had the same problem about 25 years ago and the fault was in the vertical drive gear to the distributer, for some reson there are gears that fit ok but give the wrong drive ratio to the points. Set the ignition timing and then give the engine another turn and check it again. If you have the wrong gearing,although you have just set it on the next revolution it will be out. You also mention the distributor clamp, and this can cause problems because if it,s not holding correctly will of course alter the timing. Another problem was after market points, where the flat plate spring had been made from spring steel that was too strong, so instead of just sliding round the lobe it was gripping the lobe and moving the timing weights, make sure it rests on the lobe but not over forced.
There is a choke slot on the original carburettor but no choke was fitted.
One last thing when you are trying to start after a few kicks take out the plug to see if it,s wet. Obviously if it,s dry there,s no fuel getting through.

More likely some fault in the reassembly, I would think.  He says he has a good spark, and assuming it ran before stripping the capacitor is probably OK now. The acid test would be to disconnect it....

Back to basics and check valve timing, opening, etc if I were you...

Rex,
I just remember that the condition of the condenser was critical on my B44 for the points  system to give of its best, incidentally I tapped a hole into the points plate & casing as a securing device to stop the ignition timing plate slipping round, due to vibration, I then fixed  a slot in it to within a few degrees to give a slight adjustment to the settings.

Sounds like a good idea. You could have rigged up a cable and hand lever to the points plate too and had manual ignition control. That would have fooled a few people.... ;)

Hi Mossey,
Have you fitted the pushrods the correct way round? (dont ask how I know :-[)
1965 will have points on the side I think? so this rules out distributer probs
Have you set the valve clearances according to the book?

Pushrods on B44 had different coloured tops one being red to distinguish inlet & exhaust, I think the red-topped one was exhaust pushrod, but I may be wrong (35 years of memory degradation)! |Presumably the C15 pushrods were marked differently too.

c15 pushrods weren't, well at least mine wasnt , I remember on at least two occassions getting them the wrong way round ok I was young and it was my first bike,(a very long time ago)  it is easy to do and easy to correct just back of tappet  adjusters until the push rods can come out then swap over and readjust valve clearances

Its hard to believe that BSA didn't mark their pushrods with a dot or line to distinguish them, perhaps they thought everyone had them serviced @the dealers!

Time- saving wasn't on their minds for people re-building their engines!
