Boyer Bransden?
« on: June 23, 2007, 07:45:49 PM »
Hi all,

Having owned my A65 for all of two weeks I am considering the fitting of electronic ignition to aid starting which is usually a four or more kick affair.

I've read much about Boyer Bransden being the typical system fitted so I'll go with that unless anyone can tell me a better one?

Also, as yet I am pretty hopeless with all things mechanical (or electrical and so on a very steep learning curve!) could anyone recommend a dealer or knowledgeable BSA fettler in the north west UK who could fit it for me?

I live 10 miles south of Preston in Lancashire.

Ok. I've been given the name of a dealer in Liverpool that can carry out the work, they also sell solid state rectifiers, so can anyone recommend the fitting of one of those with the Boyer set-up?

What I suppose I'm asking is what would be the noticeable benefit in every day usage?

There should be no problem at all using one of the more modern Reg/Rec control boxes with a Boyer Bransden ignition system and Boyers do make their own units called 'Power Box' http://www.boyerbransden.com/html/power_boxes.html

Also Sparx and Podtronic units would be suitable.

Which Boyer ignition system version do you intend to fit?

Micro Mk 3?
Micro-Digital?
Micro-Power?

There are also various other ignition systems available now that are worth considering, like the Pazon, Sparx and Tri-Spark kits.

Hi,

I'm open to recommendations as to which model/set up or even manufacturer, I have read in CBG and others that Boyer was a typical and sensible mod carried out by those seeking easier starting and lower maintenance... that'll be me then  :)

Basically, once fitted and set then any of these systems should need no maintenance (except maybe the occasional check of the wiring terminals?) and I have used the Boyer Micro Mk3 and Micro-Digital units over the last 20 years (Mk3) now without an electronic box failure.
The Micro Mk3 analogue unit is now becoming a bit long in the tooth, but is relatively cheap and should still give good service, although personally I'd go for the slightly more expensive Micro-Digital unit if I was choosing another Boyer.
The Boyer unit's operation (especially starting) can be affected by low voltage more than some of the more modern systems like Pazon or Tri-Spark which also use less power but of course the price is generally higher for the digital versions (Pazon digital - £230+ for example) so cost of course could be a consideration? The price of the analogue Pazon being reasonable.
