Help with 1968 BSA Starfire
« on: October 02, 2016, 10:37:08 AM »
Hi everybody, i bought a BSA starfire there awhile back and got stuck into doing her up a bit at a time, my concern is my frame number is different, as in it does not have B25 prefix, the number stamped on the frame is 40-4**6 and its on the front lug where it normally would, I have old brown logbook i got with bike and it has B25S followed with numbers but numbers dont match book, bit concerned as im looking to get the bike registered, Bike is on N.Ireland plate im from South of Ireland. Cheers guys

That is almost certainly the lug casting number. If the numbers are raised above the surface and not stamped then it obviously can't be the frame serial number.

Why is that?

Have you looked on the front engine mounting lug for the frame number as it says in the link?

Well, if it only has the lug casting number (no need to withhold two digits as that's what it is) then I don't know, as I would expect it to be stamped like this:

If yours is a '68 model then I think it would be 'B25B' as 'B25S' would be '69.

The casting (part) number of the frame lug (although you won't find the lug casting numbers in parts books as they eventually become part of the 'frame').

If you look at the photo I posted the lug has some raised numbers XX-XXXX at the front as well as the stamped frame number? The raised numbers will be the lug casting number.
