1968 Triumph TR6 Gas Tank
« on: September 09, 2007, 06:48:24 PM »
Hello,
I have a 1968 Triumph TR6 I need a tank for. I have found a "Vintage triumph trophy 500cc" tank. I was wondering if there is anyone that could tell me if this tank would be correct for my bike? The measurements are; Length is about 19 1/4" same as lenght of tunnel. Width is 2 3/8". Front mounting studs to rear mounting hole both are close to 18" and that is from center to center Studs Center to Center 4 1/2".  Here are a couple pictures. Thanks in advance.

I have a 1968 Triumph TR6 I need a tank for.

Would that be a TR6R or TR6C model? As the 1968 R model is listed as having a 4.5 (presumably Imperial?) gallon petrol tank (5.4 US gal) while the C model had a 2.5 gallon (3 US gal) tank.

The 500 Trophy models are listed as having a 3 gallon (3.6 US gal) tank.

So it may fit but may not actually be the correct tank?
Hugh (member TBS) can probably give you more accurate information?

In a word no. Measurements (under the tank) for a 650 are:
centre of stud to stud front fixing 5"
centre of front stud to centre of rear mounting bracket approx 18 1/4"
centre of rear mounting bracket to front of tank 20 1/4"
As it's a TR6 it's a UK model and should be 4gallon with a chrome top rack. Finish is Riviera Blue and Silver.

I don't see why a TR6 should just be a UK model?

I'm sure they were sold in other countries (as I sit here looking at my 1968 'Overseas Edition' copy of the TR6/T120 parts list?)

Parts book says 4.5 Gallons = R model
2.5 Gal. = C.

This is quite a complex subject as there are 4 models floating around from '66 onwards for the Trophy/Tiger. All UK or "Home Market" models were also exported, but not to the US, and are stamped TR6 or TR6P (police models). US models are TR6R(road) or TR6C(competition). Engine/frame numbers DU 68364-DUDU85903
1968 TR6 4 gallon
1968TR6R tank 3.5 gallon
1968 TR6C 2.3 gallon.
TR6 has painted steel mudguards and long resonator silencers. UK rear light.
TR6R has painted steel mudguards and short silencers, US rear light, reflector pods under front of tank.
TR6C has stainless guards high pipes on the left side and short silencers US rear light reflector pods under front of tank .
There are other differences, but I'm off to watch the telly!!!
