1968 BSA Lightning ... what lubricants to use ??
« on: September 16, 2007, 02:29:29 AM »
Can anyone tell me what oil and transmission fluid to use in this bike ?
Thanks
Greg

Hello Everyone..!
(originally posted as a 70 Lightning I checked the BSA identification link post by L.A.B. in another thread. Thanks this helps ! )

A friend just dropped his 68 Lightning off at my house for restoration. The bike is complete with non origanal Mikuni carbs. The bike has sat in his garage for 10 yrs. +
I am going to charge the battery, clean the fuel system and see if I can spark this vintage machine to life !  I was a bike mechanic in the 70's -Japanese mostly and now I ride a high output Harley Twin Cam.
I am sure over the next few months that I will have many questions and want to thank you all....because I am going to need some help on this one  !!!!   ;D

Don't forget to change all the oils including the forks, probably emulsified by now, check the tyres, they probably are age hardened, good luck.

Thanks !  Tires are actually plyable but may not last long. Regarding oil - I am in Texas so its pretty hot any viscosity recommendations ? Do these units have separate transmission oil considerations ?
I appreciate your feedback !

btw - should I be sipping a Guiness while I work on British bikes ?  ;D

Good luck.  I just started the same thing - same bike.

I'll be glad to trade any tips b/c I don't know that much about BSA's.

Curious as to the answers you get on oils - I'm in Texas also.
