help identifying triumph
« on: September 20, 2007, 09:03:34 PM »
Hi,

I've just purchased a triumph

I believe it to be a 1938 speed twin

The engine and frame numbers are

Engine#
8-5t 9643

Frame#
TH 4598

I would like any information on this bike

Also it appears that it was originally blue

Your engine number is a 1938 Spoeed Twin.  The frame numbers are a little harder to tie down and indicate that the frame is a pre-war speed twin frame - but the numbers did not match, so it is not possible (for me) to say whether they are a matched pair.

Hope this helps.

Nigel.

The TOMCC might be able to  give you that information: http://www.tomcc.org/

Engine 8.5T.9645 had frame TH 4246 and as engines and frames were not supplied sequentially for assembly I would say that most likely your engine and frame were as together at initial 1938 assembly.
Original colour would more likely to have been the standard Amaranth Red (Maroon). Maybe painted blue later to make it look like a Thunderbird.
