1930? BSA Sloper Info?
« on: November 25, 2007, 06:47:01 AM »
Hello, I have just acquired what was touted as a 1930 BSA Sloper 600 SV...  The engine number has been degraded over the years, and the frame number "Y1714", doesn't appear to corolate with what I can find... It needs a cylinder head, but I am unsure the true displacement, thus am unsure what head I need... any ideas or help you can provide would be MUCH appreciated!

At first glance either it has the wrong gearbox for a 1930 or it is a later gearbox in an early frame.

Also I don't think the 1930 bikes had tanktop instruments, there was an option for a handlebar mouted panel though on the de-luxe models.

Will look at my 1930 sloper in the garage a bit closer and post some pics.

Frame number should prefix X and engine also prefixed X so your prefix of Y should mean its 1931.

Try the BSA Owners club pages

Thanks for the response... Here is the top of the tank... The Gear box says "BSA Four Speed" on the inspection cover.... The head is rusted and there appears to be no way that an exhaust pipe could be connected to the exhaust port... Mystery continues...

Its an early 30's 557cc with the wrong gearbox. The gearbox on the bike is a later star range gearbox with foot change (lever is upright), it should have a hand change box (the hand lever is present), have a look at this one

So could be a 5.57 HP H30 or H31 model?: H31-8 = http://home.planet.nl/~leonhop3/1931_h8.jpg

The engine number prefix would be 'XX' for H30 (1930)or 'Y8' for H31 (1931) but the matching frame number prefix should be 'XH' for H30 and 'Y7' for H31, according to the Draganfly website info: http://www.draganfly.co.uk/data/pdf/bsa_vin.pdf

Thank You so much for your assistance. The frame number is Y7 1714 (1931), so without the first two engine digits being legible, it could be either a S31-7 (500cc) or the H31-8 (550cc Deluxe)... Without cc'ing the barrel, any other ideas? Maybe they both use the same head? Here's the whole thing...
