Insurance Headache.
« on: February 29, 2008, 07:38:41 PM »
I've got a 1978 Chang Jiang CJ750 - it's a Chinese copy of the BMW R71/75. My problem is, no insurer seems to have Chinese bikes on their system. I've tried Carole Nash and had a quote from Norwich Union for £500, but there has to be something cheaper out there. Any ideas?

Sorry to hear of your insurance problem;I would suggest you contact the dealer selling Chinese copy BMW bikes and see whether the can point you in the right direction.I have seen small adverts by a dealer probably in Old Bike Mart so look there first.Good luck Harry.

Thanks Harry, but I imported it directly from China. I did find an insurance company here, but when I told them I was a journalist  they refused to insure me. It seems that ALL journalists are prone to jumping on their motorbikes and racing after stories. Despite the fact that if I was to ever do that (I'm a feature writ not a news journalist), I wouldn't choose to do it on a CJ750.

Hi CJ750, many thanks for your reply to my message about your insurance problem.I am not connected with the insurance industry but you might try approaching an independent insurance broker to see if they can find cover for you.Your occupation as you correctly identify is a factor affecting the premium.Sorry, Ihave run out of ideas now, good luck Harry.

Hi,
Check out this page:
http://www.realclassic.co.uk/bemw03100600.html

At the bottom it mentions that the owner had a deal with an insurance company for the very bike you've got. It has his company's details so I'm sure he could point you in the right direction.

Are you a self employed writer? There must be a better designation of your employment than journalist. If there is it may drop your premium.
I've got to go now as the 'Transparent Wall Maintenance Engineer' has finished cleaning my windows and needs paying. Cheers.

Thanks Search Guru. Yes, I've spoken to John and he put me in touch with two CJ owners here in Scotland. Unfortunately, the insurance company one of them recommended, and therefore has a CJ750 on its books, is the one that turned me down. And in answer to the question about a different designation for freelance journalist, yes, thanks to your post there is now one. It's Transparent Wall Maintenance Engineer. Who ever said honesty pays never tried to get their motorbike insured. Cheers all.
