New Triumph owner needs help !
« on: May 03, 2008, 01:47:04 PM »
Glad I found you guys! I am the proud new owner of a Triumph 1955 T110 and I have a lot to learn. Last Bike I owned was a  Suzuki in 1983. I am however not unfamiliar with British engineering, I own a 1965 Jaguar E type. I have ordered some repair manuals from ebay, along with some Whitworth tools, but have a few dumb questions that cant wait to be answered. 1) The bike runs great, but there is no battery, just wires hanging,  lights work only at high revs, is this a 6 volt system ? What kind of Battery do I need. I know that it would be easy to fry something if I don't know what I'm doing. Is there an explanation of the wiring / magneto online somewhere ? (2) Second dumb question, did this bike have a side stand, if so where can I find a replacement (3)I need to find the "Triumph" script for the gas tank. (4) Is anyone reproducing the nacelle, I have only a chrome headlight with no speedometer or switches. Thanks in advance, Rob G.

Yes, and probably a mag too.

The largest 6V one you can fit in the space.

Is there an explanation of the wiring / magneto online somewhere ?

Likely, but a manual is better

Should have a lug on the bottom frame tube, if it did. Google "Triumph" and should bring up many suppliers in the US(?) Same for the parts below.

Yes, although it is possible to convert the 6V (dynamo) electrical system to 12V.

You really do need a copy of the factory manual for that model. Photo copy manuals are available, and I do strongly suggest you get one, along with the 1955 parts book.

Here's some Lucas service sheet information: http://www.bolsover.com/lucas/index.htm

Yes, according to the parts book.

There are some good parts suppliers worldwide.

As we don't know where you live, (yet another 'International' member!) and can only guess at your nationality by your phraseology & terminology thus making it difficult to suggest who best to try, I can only guess you are in the US? So you could try:

http://www.rabers.com/

http://www.klempfsbritishparts.com/tech.htm

http://www.sterlingmotorworks.com/

http://www.raskcycle.com/

http://www.britishonly.com/

There are also a large number of spares suppliers in the UK.

http://www.lencraigandsons.co.uk/

http://www.btinternet.com/~hawkshaw.motorcycles/

http://www.motorcycle-uk.com/britbits/

http://www.tms-motorcycles.co.uk/

Finding the correct nacelle parts can be difficult? As the 'new' items will most probably be pattern parts. There were also many changes made to the nacelle assembly, so getting all the right parts for your year and model may be difficult, although not impossible.

'Ace classics' in London can supply you with just about all the sheet metal you need to bring your T110 up to standard, including fenders, tool/battery box & lid and the nacelle. They're good parts and fit well but they're not cheap.

You're lucky 'cos it sounds like you have a magneto with a good spark. Fixing the dynamo is relatively easy and cheap but fixing the mag can be a bottomless pit of expensive problems. Enjoy the ride  ;)

Thanks for all the great information, I am awaiting the Hayes book from ebay, and a parts manual, but I'm anxious to get on the road. is the electrical system Positive or Negative earth ? I'll start tearing into it Monday or Tuesday, I'll also try to post some photos.  BTW I am located in Gettysburg, Pa. USA, thanks again, Rob
