Hi Ian,check  petrol flow {filter might be a bit clogged up}: check contact breaker points [state of gap and condenser a lot of sparking  on the points may indicate a faulty condenser}:is the HT lead made of copper? { carbon leads can cause problems} check carburettor joint to cylinder block  is gas tight: Is the plug the correct one and in good condition? try another one:is there too much oil in the petrol?{consult handbook for correct ratios } though with modern lubricants it is possible to reduce the quantity of oil -consult the oil company. Finally check the filler cap air hole is clear that is all for now Harry.
