BSA 1953 Golden Flash
« on: December 17, 2008, 06:45:26 AM »
Hi
Am restoring a 1953 plunger BSA Golden Flash in Pune, India & would greatly appreciate help on the following:

Does the main roller bearing , drive side, have a seal on one end ( end facing primary drive case ) ?

Thanks in anticipation
Anji

I too would have expected to find a primary oil seal, however, the '49-'53 parts book doesn't appear to list or illustrate any (67-674) seal?

Although I haven't had much to do with the semi-unit BSA twins, I'm pretty sure there is not an oil seal between the crankshaft and primary chaincase.  To my recollection the splined sleeve that fits on the crankshaft has a flange on the crankcase end which butts up to the main bearing and encourages some sort of 'splash' lubrication to the engine sprocket.  This flange should have a swirl machined into the perimeter I think.

I hope this helps (and I hope it is accurate)

Anji,

I suggest that you contact C&D Autos, who, I am sure, will be able to give you the correct information?
